THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and BLY MANOR Address Possibility of a Third Season
The Haunting of Bly Manor recently dropped on Netflix and the horror series, which is a follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House, has been met with mixed reviews. I personally enjoyed it, but I knew going in to it that it was going to be a very different kind of story than Hill House. I was expecting different, and while it wasn’t as scary as Hill House, it still told a wonderful and haunting story.
I’m hoping that Netflix orders a third season of the horror anthology and that the creators and executive producers Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy return to tell a new creepy story. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, they were asked about a potential third season and Flanagan is certainly open to exploring more ghost stories. He explained:
“A ghost is an impact from the past on the present in every ghost story. That's all it really is, no matter how you dress it up. A ghost is simply an element of the past that refuses to live in the past and instead just encroaches upon the present that it alters the present. It changes the trajectory of the person who’s experiencing that little piece of the past... That link between memory and ghosts and between ghosts and the past, that is the lifeblood of the show.
"I feel like there’s no shortage of ghosts in the world for all of us. So, if we could find some common language with which to talk about them, then that’s something we always aspire to do this season or beyond, if that’s the way it goes."
I think Flanagan and his creative team have done great things with telling ghost stories in Hill House and Bly Manor, and he’s right! There is no shortage of ghost stories to tell! The big question is, what kind of ghost story will they tell for the third season?
While we wait for news of a Season 3, Flanagan is currently developing another Netflix series titled Midnight Mass, which follows “an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events — and frightening omens — after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest."
