THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and BLY MANOR Creator Mike Flanagan Says the Door Is Open for Another Season
I’m a huge fan of Mike Flanagan’s horror shows The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, and I would love to see a new show in this horror anthology series franchise. Well, according to Flanagan, the door is open for more.
During a recent interview at a press event at Netflix’s New York City headquarters, the filmmaker said: "What makes the Haunting 'The Haunting', and if and how we could re-approach it, is something we talk about pretty frequently because we've always left that door open. [But] we don't want to do it just to do it."
When discussing The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor he said: "Our thing with The Haunting is that we always wanted it to be primarily based on a piece of classic horror literature, and ideally something that has been adapted before that we can do something different with. When we think of The Haunting, we think about authors like [Edgar Allan] Poe and [Charles] Dickens. The other criteria with it is that it has to primarily be about ghosts.”
As for as if his new projects The Fall of the House of Usher and The Midnight Club fall into that category, he said: “That question came up with The Fall of the House of Usher because that was based on Poe. It's just not a ghost story, and so, there's no haunting there." He then concluded, reiterating that The Midnight Club "was always its own thing."
Trevor Macy, who runs Intrepid Pictures with Flanagan, also chimed in, saying that "not everything" spooky the production company puts out has to be linked to The Haunting. "We wrestle with that quite a bit because it would be great to do another one, but you have to be rigorous about what it is and what it isn't.”
I get that they don’t want to do another ‘Haunting’ project just to do it, but I hope that sometime in the near future they find a great idea that they want to run with!
