The History of Netflix Is Told in a New Doc Called NETFLIX VS. THE WORLD, and Here's the Trailer
It’s been pretty incredible to see Netflix grow from a simple DVD mail subscription service to a streaming giant that is now producing its own great and entertaining original content.
Netflix was not an overnight success, and it stumbled along the way as the company tried to figure out what its full potential was. There’s a documentary called Netflix Vs. The World that gives us a history of the company.
The doc is based on Gina Keating’s book Netflixed: The Epic Battle for America’s Eyeballs. The author spoke to the Netflix founding team, executives from Blockbuster, journalists, and producers, who witnessed the company grow over the past 20 years.
Here’s the brief synopsis for the doc:
Netflix vs the World charts Netflix’s two-decade rise and transformation of home entertainment, content production and the entertainment industry itself through the voices of its founders, rivals, and industry experts.
Keating is currently raising funds through Kickstarter in order to finish the film and distribute it commercially. Before you watch the trailer, here’s a description of Keating’s book:
Netflix has come a long way since 1997, when Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings decided to start an online DVD store before most people owned a DVD player. Yet its long-term success—or even survival—is still far from guaranteed.
Journalist Gina Keating recounts the fast-paced drama of the company’s turbulent rise to the top and its attempt to invent two new kinds of business. First it engaged in a grueling war against videostore behemoth Blockbuster, transforming movie rental forever. Then it jumped into an even bigger battle for online video streaming against Google, Hulu, Amazon, and the big cable companies.
Drawing on extensive interviews and her years covering Netflix as a reporter, Keating makes this tale as absorbing as it is important.
