The Hulk Scenes in The AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Trailers Confirmed to Be Intentional Misdirection

As you know, there was a good amount of footage from the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War that never made its way into the final cut of the film. As many of us suspected, that's because Marvel Studios was intentionally trying to misdirect fans. Specifically, the scenes featuring the Hulk in the battle of Wakanda.

During a recent event at the Smithsonian, directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained the reason for the misdirection. Basically, they wanted to give Bruce Banner the chance to be the hero and not rely on The Hulk to come in and save the day. Joe Russo said:

"We have to be careful with the character of Banner. Because if every time he's in trouble Hulk saves him, Hulk becomes the hero and he becomes whiny. We wanted to force Banner to be the hero."

The beginning of Infinity War sets up the lack of Hulk in the rest of the film after Thanos kicks his ass. The Hulk was feeling very self-conscious and retreated into Banner not wanting to fight again. Getting beat down like that destroyed his confidence. So, without The Hulk, Banner had to find a way to fight and the Hulkbuster gave him the perfect opportunity.

I loved how Banner was handled in this film and it will be interesting to see how his story arc plays out throughout the course of Avengers 4. I'm sure we'll get some more Hulk action in that movie. 

One thing we now know for sure is that Marvel Studios will happily lie to the fans in the trailers. That means from here on out we can never really trust what we are seeing in the trailers. Does that bother you?
