New Details on THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM, Which is Just One Movie, But There's Another LORD OF THE RINGS Movie in Development

Warner Bros. is betting big on the future of the stories set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. They’ve already announced one new live-action film with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum, which is being directed by Andy Serkis.

Not long after that was announced, Ian McKellen said that it would be two films, but that actually isn’t the case.

Lord of the Rings screenwriter Philippa Boyens has confirmed that The Hunt For Gollum will only be one movie, but also reveals that there is a separate film also in development.

When asked if The Hunt For Gollum would be two films, Boyens said: “I can tell you definitively it isn’t two films!

“That was a genuine misunderstanding that happened because we’ve begun to work, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being The Hunt For Gollum, the second one still to be confirmed.”

Boyens went on to reveal new details on the story and promised The Hunt For Gollum would be a gripping tale, saying:

“It’s quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria. It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”

That’s going to be an interesting story to see unfold!

Peter Jackson is producing the film along with his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens who will write the script along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

A variety of Middle Earth films will “explore storylines yet to be told,” and this particular film will obviously focus on Gollum. As you might imagine, there are some familiar faces that could appear in the movie, and one of the big ones is Gandalf.

During a previous interview, Jackson opened up about the story they are looking to tell offering some insight on why they wanted to tell this tragic story of Gollum.

Jackson explained: “The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic.

“I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films.

“It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.”

It’ll be cool to see how these future Lord of the Rings films turn out.
