THE INSTITUTE Renewed for Season 2 at MGM+: Stephen King’s Thriller Series Is Just Getting Started
The Institute isn’t done haunting our screens just yet. MGM+ has officially renewed the gripping thriller series, based on Stephen King’s 2019 novel, for a second season. The next chapter is set to bring even more mystery, danger, and supernatural thrills to the table with an eight-episode order.
Season 1 became MGM+’s most successful premiere to date, which likely made the renewal an easy call. The series was brought to life by an impressive creative team that includes King himself as executive producer, alongside Jack Bender (Lost, Game of Thrones, Mr. Mercedes, From) and writer-executive producer Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand).
The first season starred Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), and Joe Freeman, with a talented supporting cast that featured Simone Miller, Fionn Laird, Jason Diaz, and Jane Luk. Casting details for Season 2 haven’t been revealed yet, but it’s safe to assume more interesting characters are on the way.
King himself expressed excitement about what’s to come, saying: “Set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute and I can’t wait.”
Bender and Cavell also chimed in, sharing their enthusiasm for continuing the story: “We’ve been so gratified by the response to our first season, which is a testament to the dedication of our fantastic cast and crew.
“We’re thrilled that Michael Wright and everyone at MGM have enabled us to continue Stephen’s powerful and timely story. From this project’s inception, we’ve felt there would be much more story to tell as our brilliant characters continue to navigate their way through the dangers of the world they’re facing.”
