THE INSTITUTE Season 2 Trailer Takes the Fight to a Dangerous New Level
Escaping the Institute was the hard part. Destroying the people responsible for it might be even harder.
MGM+ has released the first trailer for The Institute Season 2, and the Stephen King adaptation is expanding its story beyond the events of the novel. After the first season took King’s book through its ending, the series now has some freedom to send Luke and his fellow survivors into dangerous new territory.
The trailer shifts the story toward conspiracy and spy thriller territory as Luke, Tim, and the others attempt to expose the Institute and shut it down for good. Of course, an organization powerful enough to kidnap psychic children, murder their families, and turn those kids into human weapons isn’t going to disappear without a fight.
Here’s the official synopsis: “In the wake of their climactic escape from Dennison, Luke and his friends search for a way to end the Institute for good,” reads the official synopsis. “Meanwhile, the Director enlists a new ally, tech billionaire Nolan Reeves, to help him rebuild, and Sigsby’s life as a fugitive pushes her to seek a way back ‘in.'”
One of the biggest additions this season is Nolan Reeves, a tech billionaire played by Alfie Allen, best known for Game of Thrones. Reeves has a major presence throughout the trailer and appears poised to become an important player in the Institute’s attempt to recover from the destruction at Dennison.
Season 1 ended with Luke, played by Joe Freeman, escaping alongside Tim, played by Ben Barnes, and the other survivors as the Institute fell apart around them. Their next mission is to expose what had been happening and make sure the organization couldn’t continue using children with psychic abilities as weapons.
That mission looks considerably more complicated in Season 2. The people running the Institute believe their work could influence the fate of humanity, and they have the money, resources, and connections to keep their operation alive. Luke also possesses extremely powerful telekinetic abilities, making him both a serious threat and a valuable target.
The returning cast includes Mary Louise Parker as Ms. Sigsby, Simone Miller as Kalisha, Fionn Laird as Nicky, Arlen So as George, Robert Joy as Dr. Hendricks, and Hannah Galway as Wendy.
Jeff Fahey also appears to be returning, which should give the series a chance to dig further into the mysterious villain he played during the first season.
The first season had the advantage of King’s novel providing a clear path for the story. Season 2 is a different beast. With the book’s main storyline already covered, the show can explore what happens when these kids stop running and decide to fight back.
That could make for a pretty cool second chapter. The Institute Season 2 premieres November 8 on MGM+. Will you be tuning in?
