It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Universal Pictures released the Josie and the Pussycats movie back in 2001. In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the film, stars Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid reunited virtually to talk about the film, which has since become a cult classic.

I actually loved this film when it was first released! I thought it was brilliant how they handled the story and characters. Not many people felt the same way I did, and when talking about the movie and the audience at the time, Dawson said:

“I think it was way ahead of its time. You watch it now and it so resonates with the moment we’re in but at the time I think it was hard for people to really appreciate the satire that it was.”

Dawson went on to talk about film being about young women sticking together as the machine of fame and stardom tried to destroy them. She explains that the film was about friendship and shares:

“There’s scene after scene after scene that was not about how men were in our lives. It wasn’t about all these other things. It was about us and our dreams and our passions. And seeing these men being being super supportive of these women and wanting to see them shine. And watching them grow in front of you and being amazed by that. It’s just there are so many levels in it that are just really profound looking back on it through the lens of now.”

If you’ve never seen Josie and the Pussycats, it’s a film that’s worth checking out. It’s pretty fun to see the cast get together all these years later to look back at the movie. You can watch the virtual reunion below.
