THE LAST JEDI Director Rian Johnson to Create Entire New STAR WARS Trilogy!
HUGE, HUGE, HUGE announcement from Lucasfilm today revealing that writer/director of the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi Rian Johnson's work is far from finished in the galaxy far, far away.
Today Lucasfilm announced that Johnson will create from scratch a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, and he will also direct the first installment.
Lucasfilm and Disney say that they are "immensely proud" of the work that Johnson did on The Last Jedi. They go as far as explaining that this new trilogy will be completely "separate from the episodic Skywalker saga" and Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never visited.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
This announcement solidifies Disney and Lucasfilm's long-term plans to release a Star Wars Movie every year, although it's not clear when this new trilogy will arrive exactly. In the meantime, we are only weeks away from seeing Johnson’s work in the current trilogy when Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
This is so exciting. I am very happy to hear that Lucasfilm and Disney have made plans for the future of Star Wars beyond stand alone films. There are so many possibilities and with this huge project in the hands of someone as capable and talented as Johnson, we can only assume it will be a great addition to all things Star Wars. What do you guys think?
