THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Director Wes Ball Once Said It Should Be "The Next Big Mo-Cap AVATAR-Like Movie"

It was recently revealed that The Maze Runner director Wes Ball would be directing a live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda for Sony Pictures. The filmmaker recently made Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which actually looks like it could be a good movie.

As you might imagine, Ball has probably been involved with this project for some time now before officially signing on and has had some time to think about what he would want to do with the project. We don’t really know what his current vision for the film is, but thanks to some of the filmmaker’s old social media posts on X, he offers a little insight into what he has thought about in regards to the fantasy franchise.

In one post earlier this year, he praised the game Tears of the Kingdom for its great story. Then, In another post way back in 2010, the director said: “Since I could never even hope to have the chance to direct it, the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie should be... THE LEGEND OF ZELDA.”

It’s pretty wild that at one point he thought about a Legend of Zelda movie, but never believed he would be the guy to direct it. I have no idea if that vision of a mo-cap Avatar-like film is still something he envisions for the film, but it might be! He recently had a lot of experience working with mo-cap in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, so he’s got the skills to make it happen for Zelda.

The movie is still a ways off from going into production, but I would love to know what Ball’s vision for the film is. We’ll just have to be patient for that information to be revealed. In the meantime, we’ve got these old social media posts.

The Legend of Zelda movie is being written by Derek Connelly (Jurassic World, Detective Pikachu) and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow of Nintendo and Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc.
