The Live-Action GUNDAM Movie Moves Forward with Screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan

Lost and Runaways screenwriter Brian K. Vaughn has been hired by Legendary Entertainment to write the script from the live-action Gundam film that they are producing. The film will be based on the popular Mecha anime franchise that was created by Sunrise.

I’m a big fan of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and I’ve been wanting to see a live-action adaptation of it for years! This could looks so freakin’ badass with today’s filmmaking technology! We got a little tease of what Gundam would look like on the big screen thanks to Ready Player One.

The 1979 series was created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and next month marks its 40th anniversary! During a previous interview with Sunrise President Yasuo Miyakawa, he said that Sunrise has maintained almost all of the control over the film adaptation. That control was a requirement for Sunrise to agree to the project. Legendary will act as an active collaboration on the project, and Miyakawa says their relationship there will be a genuine one. He explained that the film will not be a "Sunrise movie, nor a legendary movie, it will be a real collaboration."

It was also explained that the creative team wants to "try to avoid a simplistically military character to history and especially to the protagonists. And also to turn the latter into a kind of superhero. " The movie will also not be about heroic soldiers engaged in heroic actions but, it will probably be a film based on normal people in an extraordinary context and faithful to the basic principles of the Gundam."

The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted.

This film has the potential to be visually epic and I hope that Brian K. Vaughn can develiver an equally compelling and epic script and story.
