The Long-Lost Full Novel of THE THING Will Be Adapted Into a Film by Blumhouse Titled FROZEN HELL

John Carpenter’s classic sci-fi horror film The Thing and the 1951 film that preceded it, The Thing From Another World, were both based on the 1938 novella written by John W. Campbell Jr. It was originally published in an issue of Astounding Science Fiction and the story was titled Who Goes There?

Well, it turns out there was a full expanded version of the story that was recently discovered in 2018 by John Betancourt. This version of the story is the length of a novel, and it’s titled Frozen Hell! When talking about this novel, Betancourt explained:

“In 1938, acclaimed science fiction author John W. Campbell published the novella Who Goes There?, about a team of scientists in Antarctica who discover and are terrorized by a monstrous, shape-shifting alien entity. The story would later be adapted into John Carpenter’s iconic movie The Thing (following an earlier film adaptation in 1951). The published novella was actually an abridged version of Campbell’s original story, called Frozen Hell, which had to be shortened for publication. The Frozen Hell manuscript remained unknown and unpublished for decades, and it was only recently rediscovered.”

It’s pretty exciting stuff for sci-fi fans and now we have more awesome news to share with you! Betancourt has announced that Frozen Hell will get a feature film adaption by Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, He explained:

“The movie will be from Universal and Blumhouse. Everyone is super excited about it, and it’s being fast-tracked.”

The film is also being produced by Alan Donnes, and this is what he said in his initial announcement:

“It’s OFFICIAL! I received my signed contract and first check! I am Executive Producing a remake of THE THING but with additional chapters of John Campbell’s groundbreaking novel, Frozen Hell, that had been lost for decades. Now, for the first time ever, Campbell’s full vision will be realized on the big screen. The new film will include the very best of RKO’s THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, John Carpenter’s classic THE THING and both books, Frozen Hell and Who Goes There?”

This is pretty damn cool, and I can’t wait to see what comes of it! I don’t think I would consider this a remake as the story has all new source material to pull from. This is exciting! In all honesty, I kind of wish that would adapt this into a series instead to really dig in and explore all these new details from this book.
