THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 SDCC Banners Reveal Gandalf the Grey's New Look
San Diego Comic-Con is already delivering some cool surprises, and fans of Middle-earth have something new to get excited about. Fresh banners for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 have started popping up around SDCC, giving us our first look at Daniel Weyman's fully realized Gandalf the Grey.
After spending the first two seasons watching the mysterious Stranger slowly discover who he really was, it looks like the legendary wizard has finally stepped into the role fans have been waiting for. Along with his iconic staff, Gandalf is now sporting the familiar pointed hat that instantly brings the beloved character to mind.
It's hard not to notice how closely Weyman's version now resembles Sir Ian McKellen's iconic unforgettable portrayal from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. While this series is telling its own story thousands of years before those films, the updated costume certainly feels like a fun visual bridge between the two interpretations.
Season 2 ended with some massive shakeups across Middle-earth. Eregion fell, Celebrimbor met his tragic end, and Sauron secured possession of the nine Rings that will eventually corrupt the future Nazgûl.
At the same time, the Stranger finally accepted his true identity as Gandalf the Grey, while Galadriel and the remaining Elves withdrew to establish Rivendell.
Season 3 jumps ahead several years and drops viewers into the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron. As the Dark Lord moves closer to forging the One Ring that will cement his power over Middle-earth, the stakes are about to get much higher.
With Gandalf now embracing his destiny, it certainly looks like Mithrandir will become one of Sauron's greatest obstacles. Armed with his staff and now wearing his signature hat, the wizard appears ready to take a much more active role in the battle against the growing darkness.
Prime Video also shared the following tease for the upcoming season: "Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots... as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all.. each other."
The series will also see the return of Morfydd Clark, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Maxim Baldry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Trystan Gravelle, Ema Horvath, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Leon Wadham, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.
Season 2 also welcomed several notable additions to the cast. Sam Hazeldine stepped into the role of Adar, replacing Joseph Mawle, while Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear, and Tanya Moodie joined the series in key roles.
Amazon recently confirmed that The Rings of Power will return this November, and if these new SDCC banners are any indication, Gandalf is finally starting to look like the legendary wizard generations of Tolkien fans know and love.
With Sauron preparing to forge the One Ring and Middle-earth racing toward one of its greatest conflicts, Season 3 is shaping up to deliver some epic fantasy action.
