THE MANDALORIAN's Werner Herzog Called Series Creators "Cowards" for Keeping a CGI Baby Yoda in Their Back Pocket
If Star Wars fans are united on anything, it’s that there was too much use of CGI in Episodes I-III and not enough practical effects like the ones in original Episodes IV-VI. So with that in mind, it’s no surprise that everyone loves the Baby Yoda that stars in the incredible Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. Star Wars fan and Mandalorian cast member Werner Herzog feels that a lot of the connection that fans feel to the mighty infant has much to do with the fact that he’s not a CG character.
In a recent report from Vanity Fair, executive producer Dave Filoni said that Herzog expressed his disdain “when he saw The Mandalorian creator and showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni removing the miniature creature from set during one of his scenes with the being. They were preparing to shoot a blank slate of the sequence as a backup in case they decided during postproduction that the puppet wasn’t convincing enough and a digital version had to be substituted.”
His response to the men was right to the point:
“You are cowards,” he declared. “Leave it.”
Good for him. The live action Baby Yoda is adorable and captivating, and no one is complaining about the way he looks. I’m glad Herzog stuck to his guns and the powers that be agreed. Do you think Baby Yoda could have been enhanced in any way?
