THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU Tops Disney+ Streaming Charts After Its Disappointing Box Office Run
Unfortunateley, The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t become the massive theatrical hit Disney and Lucasfilm were likely hoping for, but Din Djarin and his little green buddy are having much better luck on streaming.
After arriving on Disney+ on September 2, the Star Wars movie shot to the top of the streaming charts. FlixPatrol ranked The Mandalorian and Grogu as the No. 1 movie on Disney+ worldwide on September 6, putting it ahead of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the rest of the platform’s current movie lineup.
That’s a nice change of fortune for a movie that had a rougher time at the box office. Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian and Grogu brought Pedro Pascal back as Din Djarin, with Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White joining the cast. Favreau also produced the film alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Ian Bryce.
The story follows Din and Grogu as they embark on an adventure across the galaxy hunting down high-ranking Imperial war criminals, taking the characters fans came to love on Disney+ and giving them a full-blown theatrical Star Wars adventure.
Disney released the movie in theaters on May 22, and it ultimately earned around $345 million worldwide against a reported $165 million production budget.
While $345 million certainly isn’t nothing, it’s a disappointing result for a major Star Wars movie, especially once marketing and other costs are factored into the equation.
I had a lot of fun watching The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters. It was great seeing Din and Grogu on the big screen, and the movie delivered the kind of large-scale Star Wars action that plays really well in a theater. It’s a shame more fans didn’t come out to support it there.
At the same time, I can understand why so many people waited. Din Djarin and Grogu began their journey on Disney+, and audiences have spent years watching their adventures at home.
Fans also knew The Mandalorian and Grogu would eventually make its way back to Disney+, so plenty of people probably decided to skip the theater and wait.
Now that the movie is available as part of a Disney+ subscription, that audience is showing up. Its No. 1 streaming performance shows that there was still plenty of interest in Din and Grogu.
The bigger issue may have been convincing fans who discovered these characters through streaming that they needed to pay for a theatrical ticket to see their next adventure.
For those who skipped The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters, Disney+ has become the place where a lot of them are finally catching up with Din and Grogu.
