THE MARVELS Director Nia DaCosta on the Film's Flop - "Everyone Tried Their Best"
Marvel’s Captain Marvel (2019) was a major box office success, and the studio felt that the superhero follow-up would also hit it out of the ballpark, but it made a small fraction of the original, and unfortunately was a flop.
Fans pointed to a weak story, the film feeling rushed or disjointed, and they complained about the film’s stars, but where did the filmmakers go wrong? Director Nia DaCosta still doesn’t really know.
In a recent video interview with Deadline, she reflected on the film’s struggles, stating:
"It’s so interesting, because the Marvel machine had so much chatter around it. But when I look back on it, everyone tried their best. Everyone was trying to make a great film, and I will say I’m really happy to have those relationships.
“I was just visiting the Avengers set last summer, which was really fun, catching up with the producers, seeing the Russos, and some of my friends were in the movie. So it was really nice, despite how everything went with the box office and the reviews, knowing that the relationships are so good.
“ I look back and everyone tried their best and everyone was trying to do the right thing, and it is what it is."
I mean, what more can you say? She made a movie she and the cast and crew were proud of, and it didn’t do well. You never know what’s going to happen with films, and even Marvel is full of hits and misses.
