THE MARVELS Director Talks About Her Post-Production Absence and Mentions Visiting AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Set
Director Nia DaCosta has made many films in her career, but it was her experience with Marvel that stands apart from her other experiences, for better or worse. Despite the film’s mostly positive reviews, it didn’t bring in the money the studio expected, and it ended up costing Marvel a lot of money, but DaCosta explained in a recent interview that there was a whole lot about the process that was out of her control.
The director sat down with The Guardian to talk about her time in the MCU, and she explained the "shocking way people have talked to me in my position as a director" after Candyman. She reportedly left The Marvels during post-production to start work on her next film Hedda, and though it was previously agreed upon, she said she subsequently received "anonymous briefings" that painted her in a negative light.
"They knew the entire time that I had an obligation," DaCosta shared, "a greenlit movie with people who were waiting for me." DaCosta has previously said that there came a point when she realized The Marvels "[wasn't] going to be the movie that I pitched or even the first version of the movie that I shot," and later suggested that she was working without a "solid script."
But despite the turmoil, DaCosta affirms that there’s no bad blood between her and anyone at the studio. "There’s no ire in any of my energy. I was on the Avengers set a couple weeks ago because I still have relationships with these people." Referencing Kevin Feige, she added, "He wrote me a letter for my UK visa."
So the director was just visiting friends on set? Or perhaps she was following up to see how the scene played out that all began in The Marvels’ post-credits reveal marking the return of the X-Men. Whatever the reason, it’s good to hear that her small part of the bigger MCU story is still revered as canon.
