THE MATRIX: How to Begin a Movie
YouTuber Patrick (H) Willems has released a new video essay, and this one examines the excellent opening scene of 1999's The Matrix. I've always appreciated this scene, but I've never stopped and considered what the movie didn't do that so many other mythology-heavy sci-fi films have done: start with an opening crawl or narration setting up the world. The Matrix just drops us straight into the action. It also sets up the style and tone of the rest of the film while presenting a number of questions right off the bat to get us hooked. Man, I need to watch this whole movie again soon.
