THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Would Have Gotten Made Without Lana Wachowski's Involvement
If you watched The Matrix Resurrections, you may remember a scene involving Jonathan Groff’s Agent Smith character taking swing at Warner Bros. about the possibility of leaving the creators of The Matrix franchise behind to make another Matrix film. Well, it turns out that this was a possibility in real life.
During a recent interview with Collider, The Matrix Resurrections producer James McTeigue admits that the studio had plans to hire a different director for the film if Lana Wachowski didn’t want to make it. When asked about that, he said:
“Look. I think when you've had a franchise with that much potential money making capability, there's always talk. It's in the same way that the Marvel universe repeats and turns in on itself, or you have Spider-Man, or you have Iron Man, or Thor. There's always a potential to update those movies just because of the possibility of making the money and telling new stories. I shouldn't say it's just a purely fiscal thought.
“But yeah, look, there was versions out there, but they hadn't landed on the right version. So when Lana eventually came back around and said, ‘Look. I'm interested in making another movie,’ of course, they went with the filmmaker who was the genesis of the Matrix.”
Had the sequel been made by any other director, this film would have been a completely different movie. I have a feeling it would have been more of the same. But, I liked what Wachowski brought to the new film. I liked the unique story that it told, which focused on bringing Neo and Trinity back together.
There was nothing new with the action aspect of the film, in fact, the action was kinda sloppy in the editing. But, I dug the story. I wonder who WB would have hired to direct the sequel if Wachowski didn’t jump on board. Are there any directors you would have liked to see take on the franchise?
