The Merovingian From THE MATRIX Sequels Will Be Back For The Fourth Film

The original Matrix film was amazing and it’s one of those films that helped change cinema forever. The Sequels on the other hand… not so much. While there were aspects of the sequels I enjoyed, they just didn’t reach the same bar that the original had set.

Director Lana Wachowski is going to take another crack at the franchise, though, with Matrix 4, and it looks like the character introduced in the sequel, known as The Merovingian, will be back. The actor who played the character, Lambert Wilson, is reportedly in negotiations to come back. It’s also reported that Sense8 actor Eréndira Ibarra, will be joining the project as well.

For those of you who need a reminder of who The Merovingian is, he “is an old, powerful program that resides within the Matrix. Self-described as a ‘trafficker of information’, the Merovingian behaves much as a leader of a powerfully organized crime syndicate. He and his wife Persephone operate a smuggling ring providing a haven for exiled programs in the Matrix.”

Monica Bellucci played Persephone in the franchise, so I guess there’s a chance that she could come back as well. But, that has yet to be seen.

Wilson and Ibarra will join the previously cast Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be reprising their roles of Neo and Trinity in the film. Yahya Abdul-Mateen (Aquaman) was also recently cast in the movie and he’s rumored to be playing a younger version of Morpheus. Jada Pinkett Smith is in negotiations to reprise her role as Niobe, and then there’s Neil Patrick Harris who is taking on a mysterious role as well. Iron Fist star Jessica Henwick has also joined the film

Wachowski will co-write the screenplay with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. The Matrix 4 will be released on May 21, 2021. Hopefully, it’s better than the other sequels that were made!
