Lionsgate has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming sci-fi disaster thriller Moonfall. The film comes from director Roland Emmerich, whose films have been wreaking havoc on Earth since his alien invasion film Independence Day. Most of the films he’s made have fun with Earth destruction, and this one is no different.

In Moonfall, we see the moon on a crash course with Earth. It’s explained that “a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it.” In the story “with mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley) believes her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.”

As you’ll see in the trailer, there appears to be some kind of strange creature adding to the maddening chaos of this insane catastrophe. What does that have to do with the moon not being what we think it is? I guess we’ll find out!

This is complete and utter blockbuster movie nonsense, but it’s the kind of movie escapism that people might need and enjoy right now.

The movie also stars Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak, and Donald Sutherland. Moonfall will hit theaters on February 4, 2022. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think! Will you be watching it?
