THE MUMMY Director Alex Kurtzman Sounds Uncertain About Future of Universal's Dark Universe

It's no secret that The Mummy was a major disappointment for both fans and for Universal. With an underwhelming domestic opening at the box office, the future of Universals' Dark Universe Monster cinematic universe is in question. Now The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman is even casting doubt on his future with Dark Universe following the disappointing returns of The Mummy. Billed as one of the architects of Universal’s new monster movie series with filmmaker Chris Morgan, Kurtzman served as the film’s director and one of its co-writers.

Now that the dust has settled, Kurtzman is weighing his options regarding his role in the future of the Dark Universe. During the Television Critics Association press tour where Kurtzman was promoting Star Trek: Discoverythe filmmaker was asked by IGN about his role in the Dark Universe moving forward:

“You know the truth is, I don’t know. I really don’t know. Haven’t really decided, is the honest answer.”

As of now, Kurtzman will serve as a producer for several future Dark Universe films, including director Bill Condon’s remake of The Bride of Frankenstein (which is the next in line for release on the Dark Universe slate), as well as The Invisible Man starring Johnny Depp, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. IGN reports that Kurtzman said in a separate interview that the future Dark Universe films will be tailored more for foreign audiences, given The Mummy’s large international appeal.

“It’s hard for me to know, is the truth. I think every movie will be different. I certainly know that the legacy of the monsters have endured across the world throughout the years. Almost a century. So I have to believe American audiences will find it too with the right ingredients.”

Regardless if Universal decides to keep Kurtzman involved, the studio now has to double down its efforts to keep the Dark Universe afloat. The first thing they need to do is allow filmmakers to do their jobs and not allow the film's stars to take control of the production. (Cruise reportedly took control of The Mummy).

What do you guys think? Would Kurtzman's removal from the Dark Universe have a lasting impact on the future films?
