The Music of Prince Will Be The Inspiration For an Original Musical Film Being Developed at Universal

Movie Prince by Joey Paur

Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to several classic songs from Prince and they are looking to develop an original musical film inspired by that music. As you might expect, the songs will be used to drive the fictional narrative of the story.

This sounds similar to what the film Across The Universe did with The Beatles music or Mama Mia with Abba, where the music drives the plot.

According to Variety, Prince’s estate is heavily involved with the project and they, along with the studio, “felt that the biopic angle had largely been covered by Prince’s 1984 star-making film ‘Purple Rain’ and wanted to do something original and outside the box.”

The studio is currently on the hunt for talent to develop the movie. There’s no word on what songs will be used, but I imagine that they will include many of the classics.

I enjoy listening to the music of Prince and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of story they come up with for this movie that will pay tribute to the musical artist.
