The NATIONAL TREASURE: EDGE OF HISTORY Writers Say They Have a Plan to Bring Nicolas Cage Back to the Franchise
This December, the sequel series National Treasure: Edge of History is heading our way, and it follows Jess Valenzuela (Lisette Olivera), a 20-year-old dreamer who sets off on an exploration to discover the mystery of her family history, and, with the help of her friends, recover historical lost treasure. Fans are excited for this new adventure, and it’s cool to see Justin Bartha returning to the role of Riley Poole from the films, but what we really want to know is - will we see Nicolas Cage return to the franchise as Benjamin Franklin Gates? According to two of the show’s writers, they have a plan.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marianne and Cormac Wibberley said of original cast members returning, "there was lots of talk of trying to get Diane [Kruger] and Jon [Voight] at certain points" for the show, but "it didn't work out." Should Cage, however, make an appearance in a future season of National Treasure: Edge of History, the creatives are ready. Cormac describes this hypothetical meeting between Ben and Jess as "Tony Stark gets to visit Peter Parker," explaining:
"That's basically how we saw the relationship if Ben Gates ever showed up. She's basically Peter Parker to him and would be like, 'Oh my God, it's Ben Gates! What do I do?' That's how our universe is. We would love to bring any of the other veterans if we get another season. We have roles for all of them."
It would be a lot of fun to see Nic Cage return to the National Treasure stories! National Treasure: Edge of History is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 14th. If you haven’t seen the newly released trailer yet, check it out here.
