The New BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie Will Be Set in the Same Universe as the New TV Series
There are a couple of Battlestar Galactica projects in development right now. One is a new series being developed for NBC’s Peacock streaming service by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. The other is a film project that’s being developed by screenwriter Simon Kinberg.
We now have an update on the film from Kinberg during an interview with Collider. The producers are currently on the hunt for a director to take on the film and they are hoping to start production this year. He explained:
“It's a megillah, humongous film and the prep will be a very long prep period so I would imagine even if we attached a director today it would take six, nine months to prep this movie properly. So at the earliest, we'd be shooting at the end of this year. We'd probably be shooting at the beginning of next year. Time will tell who the director is and then you or someone else will tell who the director is."
Kinberg went on to say that he has been working closely with Esmail and confirmed that the film and TV show will have a shared universe:
"In terms of the situation with Sam and the show, I can't say too much about it other than there is synergy between the two enterprises and constant communication between us. We've become close and been having a really good time together and there will be, for lack of a better phrase and it's an overused phrase, a shared universe."
Well, that seems to make sense as shared universes are a big thing right now. As for if the film will be connected to Ron Moore’s amazing series, Kinberg said:
"There are connections, but it is certainly not simply a continuation or a remake of Ron Moore's masterpiece."
It’ll be interesting to see what those connections end up being. I’m a huge fan of the Battlestar Galactica franchise, and I really hope these upcoming projects end up being awesome!
