The New LEGO E.T. Set Features a Glowing Heart and Tons of Nostalgic Charm
If you've ever wanted E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial sitting on your shelf without worrying about government agents showing up at your front door, LEGO has you covered.
The brick-building company has unveiled a brand-new E.T. set that lets fans recreate one of cinema's most lovable aliens in impressive detail. It's the kind of collectible that feels like it was made for anyone who grew up in the '80s, loves classic sci-fi movies, or simply can't resist adding another awesome LEGO display piece to their collection.
Made up of 1,226 pieces, the set brings E.T. to life from his oversized head all the way down to his webbed feet. Once assembled, the figure features movable joints that let you pose his head and raise his famous glowing finger just like he does in the movie.
The coolest feature, though, might be the built-in light-up effect. Flip a switch and E.T.'s heart glows, recreating one of the character's most memorable visual moments. LEGO also included a buildable pot of sunflowers, giving him an extra display accessory to hold.
The timing also makes plenty of sense. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial first landed in theaters in 1982, making this release a nice early celebration ahead of the film's 45th anniversary. LEGO is also marketing it as an ideal collectible for fans of classic '80s sci-fi, especially those who've already filled their shelves with E.T. memorabilia.
There's another fun bit of timing, too. With Disclosure Day currently getting plenty of attention from Steven Spielberg fans, conversations around the legendary filmmaker's catalog have picked up again. While Disclosure may not be dominating the box office, many movie lovers have embraced it, and some even rank it alongside Spielberg's very best films, with a few putting it on the same level as, or even above, E.T..
Whether you think E.T. remains Spielberg's greatest masterpiece or you're simply looking for an awesome new LEGO build, this set looks like it'll make a great addition to any collection.
The LEGO E.T. set will begin shipping on August 1 and is priced at $140. If you've been waiting for the perfect excuse to bring everyone's favorite extraterrestrial home, this might be it.
