THE NEW MUTANTS Director Opens Up A Bit More About His Scrapped Planned Trilogy
Even though it’s taking forever for Marvel’s The New Mutants to be released, fans are still excited about finally being about to see it. When director Josh Boone initially pitched the idea to Fox, he pitched it as a trilogy of films. Boone previously explained that each one of the movies would explore a different aspect of the horror movie genre. While he has talked about this before, in a recent interview with /Film, the filmmaker did expand a little bit more and also offered information on how Warlock would have been utilized:
"We had plans, obviously, to bring in new characters in the next movie – the character of Warlock was featured in all the early drafts of the script, but it was so expensive that we weren’t able to do it. Basically, cutting him out of the narrative allowed us to make the film. So our plan was always to have Warlock come back in the next one and try to tell his story then.
"They were all supposed to be kind of separate horror genre films: the first one’s like a rubber reality horror movie, the second one was supposed to be an alien invasion movie with Warlock, and then the third one was going to take all these elements from the X-Men crossover from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s called 'Inferno' to be a kind of supernatural, apocalyptic horror movie. That was the plan."
It’s a shame that we most likely won’t see these other two movies happen. I would have loved to see the full story play out! The filmmaker does hope that he will still have the opportunity to finish what he started. In another previous interview, Boone says that he hopes the release of The New Mutants will open the door to him being able to complete his planned trilogy:
"Ultimately, after all this time, I was able to make MY New Mutants film, and I'm am proud of it. What I'm hoping for now is that it will be successful enough so the studio will allow me to complete a trilogy. I've got it all planned out."
While I would love for this to happen, I’m not going to get my hopes up. What do you all think of what Boone was looking to do with his The New Mutants trilogy?
