THE NEW MUTANTS Film Could Actually End Up With an R-Rating
The New Mutants was originally set to be released in theaters in April of 2018. Then it was pushed to February and then later pushed all the way to August 2019. The reason for the delay was to reshoot certain scenes and apparently the creative team behind the movie, which is led by director Josh Boone, still have yet to go back into production for those reshoots.
According to producer Simon Kinberg, the team is still trying to figure out the right tone for the reshoots before they move forward. When the reshoots were first reported it was said that 50% of the film would need to be reshot and that an additional one or two new characters would be added. It was also said that the studio wanted to embrace the horror aspect of the film more and make it scarier.
Kinberg goes on to tease that this is the kind of film that could go R-rated. He says that it is really what the movie wants to be, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens once they decide on how they want to proceed. I hope that they push it into to R-rated horror category!
“It’s the kind of movie that could go R, or it could be a hard PG-13. As I was saying before in terms of subgenres or the genre, it is obviously teased as a horror film, and most horror films these days are R-rated, but it stars a very young cast, so we’ll see. It really is what the movie wants to be. The studio is open to either rating… Traditionally, superhero movies are PG-13 other than Logan and the Deadpool movies, and generally, horror films are R-rated, so we’ll see where this one falls. It is a very scary, edgy movie.”
This statement seems to contradict what the director previously said about the film saying that it would be PG-13, but a very hard PG-13:
“This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal.”
Obviously, now they are seriously considering taking it to a much darker place that would push it into R-rated territory.
I just think it’s frustrating and weird that no one has been able to decide on what they want this movie to be and how they should proceed! I really liked what I saw in that first trailer that was released. I hope they figure it out soon and finish this film up so we can watch it!
New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, and Henry Zaga, and it will open on August 2, 2019.
