The NEW MUTANTS Film is Described as a "Haunted-House Movie With a Bunch of Hormonal Teenagers"

Some new information has come to light regarding the upcoming feature film adaptation of New Mutants. When developing this movie, one thing that director Josh Boone and his creative team wanted to do is give fans a comic book movie that is unlike anything that we've seen before.

We know that the film will differentiate itself by being a horror movie and this is the plot summary that was previously released:

"Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves."

Now, 20th Century Fox CEO Stacey Snider has offered some new information about the movie, which recently wrapped shooting, and what it will be like. She tells Variety:

"If we’re going to make a superhero movie, we have to ask ourselves: 'What’s our version? What’s a Fox Marvel film?'. When you look at films like Deadpool or Logan or the upcoming New Mutants, you’ll see they have their own personality."

She goes on to describe the film as a haunted house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers:

"Great effort has been put into making sure they’re differentiated. New Mutants is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It’s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they’re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a Breakfast Club detention/Cuckoo’s Nest institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it’s strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like The Shining than 'we’re teenagers let’s save the world.'"

I really like this direction that they are taking the film. A superhero movie that has more in common with The Shining than superheroes is very appealing to me because I love horror movies! It's going to be fun to see these two different genres come together.

To give you more of an idea of what to expect from the movie, it's said to be loosely based on the New Mutants comic book arc "The Demon Bear Saga." That story focuses on the New Mutants as they come under attack by a sinister psychic entity that feeds on their negative emotions and they have to stop it before it infects the world.

The film stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Henry Zaga as Sunspot.

What do you think about the direction that they are taking the story for this movie?

New Mutants will be released in theaters on April 13th, 2018.
