THE NEW MUTANTS Movie May Include Some Familiar X-MEN Faces

20th Century Fox is riding high on their Deadpool movie and is currently building up to the release of X-Men: Apocalypse, which is said to be the most epic X-Men movie yet. The studio is currently in the process of developing another X-Men franchise project based on The New Mutants. The script for the film is currently being written by Josh Boone (The Fault of Our Stars), and during an interview with IGN, producer Simon Kinberg offered an update on the status of the film and what it will entail.

“Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They're doing a really nice job of it, and it's a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it."

It great to hear that it will have its own unique and original voice. As long as it stays true to the spirit of the comic like Deadpool did, they might have another big hit on their hands. Kinberg went on to talk about why it’s fun for him to work on these films:

"That's the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”

The writer/producer also talked about the characters that could be included in the film, saying:

“There's a very deep bench. There's a long, long list of names, and I'll tell you some of the names on that list I don't even know. That's how deep it goes.”

Some of the characters that are associated with The New Mutants and have been in the previous X-Men movies include Warpath, Sunspo,t and, of course, Professor X. When asked about whether we will see some of these character from the X-Men films in The New Mutants he said:

“Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies. As we are going, I would say it's likely that you will see some familiar faces.”

I guess that means there will be some crossover possibilities with the long-running Marvel/Fox film franchise. When asked if Colossus’ sister Illyanna Rasputin, a.k.a. Magik, would be included in the film, he said with a grin:

“It’s a great role… It would be a great role to cast.”

If it’s a great role, it sounds to me like she has been included in the script that is being written, so that’s something! She’s a pretty big deal to the New Mutants team, and she’s a great character, so it makes sense that she would be included. She is a teleporter, a sorceress, and the ruler of Limbo. She can also summon a sword she created from part of her soul.

What New Mutants characters do you hope to see in the movie?
