THE NEW MUTANTS Was Contractually Guaranteed a Theatrical Release
With the release date of The New Mutants constantly being pushed back, fans have been wondering why Disney just doesn’t release it on VOD or a streaming service. Well, it turns out that hasn’t really been an option.
During a recent interview with Collider, director Josh Boone explained that the studio is contractually obliged to release the movie in theaters:
"With most movies, you sign contracts that guarantee a theatrical release, so it needs to open to ever go digital in the first place. We just, too, would like to see people to see it in the theater. But it needs to obviously be at the right time when it's safe to go back."
So, there you have it. The New Mutants was always going to be released in theaters. It’s safe to say that if the film wasn’t contractually guaranteed a theatrical release, it would have been released digitally by now. Luckily, that’s not the case. I’m happy that I’m going to eventually get to see the movie in theaters!
The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Mirage. Here’s the synopsis:
20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
The movie will be coming to theaters on August 28th.
