THE NEW MUTANTS Will Not Be Rated R and There Will Be No Costumes

I was sad when The New Mutants was pushed back to a 2019 release instead of a 2018 release. After watching the trailer, my interest was piqued and I wanted to see the film. The cast looks to be amazing with Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Anya Taylor-Joy and more involved in this film. It just looks so good. It also looks like it will make you crap your pants at moments. That’s why it may be a little surprising that it will not be rated R, but rather PG-13. This comes from director Josh Boone himself who was asked about if the characters would ever get their comic book costumes and if the movie would follow the path of Deadpool and Logan with an R rating. His response:

There are no costumes. That alone makes it different. They can’t be with the other kids at the X-Mansion. They’re too f***ed up. They’ve all killed people, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal.

For those hoping for an R-rated film, it looks like you’re out of luck. I’m still excited for this film and still very sad that it got pushed back. I would’ve watched this over Deadpool 2 hands down.
