The New PREDATOR Film PREY Will Be Presented in Both English and in Comanche

Director Dan Trachtenberg’s upcoming Predator movie Prey looks pretty damn awesome! The one thing that disappointed me was that the Comanche warriors spoke perfect English. I just kept hearing how committed the filmmaking team was to providing an accurate portrayal of the Comanche and bringing a level of authenticity to the film.

Well, I don’t have to complain about that anymore because I just learned that the movie will be released in English and in the Comanche language! There will be a version of the film that you can watch in Comanche, and that’s pretty damn cool! The original actors returned to perform their roles in Comanche.

The film was produced by Jhane Myers (Monsters of God), who is an acclaimed filmmaker and member of the Comanche nation herself and “is known for her attention and dedication to films surrounding the Comanche and Blackfeet nations and her passion for honoring the legacies of the Native communities. As a result, the film features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent.”

In an interview with /Film, she shared this wonderful bit of new information saying:

"That's really important to me being Comanche and working with our Comanche language department, also with working with Comanche language speakers. But just the fact that people will have a choice, the world will have a choice to listen to the whole film in Comanche is amazing.

"That's never been done for my tribe, ever. There's only a couple of movies. I think 'Star Wars,' which was 30 years old when they transcribed it into Navajo, and then there was Navajo again for 'Finding Nemo,' which was 20 years old when they did that. But this is the first time for a brand new film to come out and have that option to hear it all in the whole language. So that not only inspires the young language speakers of my nation, but that inspires a lot of other people and shows them, and like I said, shows the world what our language is about. Which is thrilling for me.

“It's great because I have a great knowledge of our history, because I've worked with museums, I've also studied different aspects of our culture, but to put all of those in there at once it is just amazing. Even some of our stories, some of our language stories, all of those nuances is something really new to this franchise.”

This news makes me happy. We’ll get to hear the characters speak as they would have 300 years ago.

The movie follows a young woman named Naru, “a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.”

The film’s cast includes Amber Midthunder (The Ice Road, Roswell, New Mexico), newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (Sooyii), Michelle Thrush (The Journey Home), and Julian Black Antelope (Tribal).

Prey will be released exclusively on Hulu on August 5, 2022.
