The fifth Scream film, the title of which has been revealed to be Scream, has wrapped production! Franchise creator and writer Kevin Williamson made the announcement on Twitter and shared a couple photos from the set along with logo for the title. He shared the following message:

That’s a wrap on Scream, which I’m excited to announce is the official title of the next film! Nearly 25 years ago, when I wrote Scream and Wes Craven brought it to life, I could not have imagined the lasting impact it would have on you, the fans.

I’m excited for you to return to Woodsboro and get really scared again. I believe Wes would’ve been so proud of the film that Matt and Tyler are making. I’m thrilled to be reunited with Neve, Courteney, David and Marley, and to be working alongside a new filmmaking team and incredible cast of newcomers that have come together to continue Wes’s legacy with the upcoming relaunch of the franchise that I hold so dear to my heart. See you in theatres January 2022.

Williamson also took part in a virtual panel recently to help raise money for charity. While there he shared the following advice on how to handle a new Scream movie, saying:

“No deconstruction. No self-awareness. Just do the opposite of what we did. I do worry that the franchise kind of wears itself out with all the meta and the deconstruction and there’s only so many times you can it. So many people have since then done horror films like it, or in the vein of. So you kind of worry that it’s run its course.”

He then went on to talk about the new Scream writers, James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and how they found a way to make the sequel seem both fresh and familiar. He explained:

“What I love about the new Scream is that it does take a fresh approach. It’s this beautiful sort of fresh new movie, but it also has this nostalgic factor that runs through it. That to me was a perfect blend of how to do the next Scream. So that was what I was most excited about.”

The new Scream film comes from the filmmaking team behind Ready or Not, Radio Silence, and all the core members of the franchise cast are returning to reprise their roles including Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescot, David Arquette as Dewy Riley, and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers. They are also joined by new cast members Jack Quaid and Melissa Barrera.

As far as story details go, all we know right now is that “it will follow a woman returning to her hometown to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.”

Scream is scheduled to hit theaters on January 14, 2022.
