New STARFLEET ACADEMY Trailer Teases Mystery, Adventure, and the Future of the Federation
The Star Trek universe is getting a whole new class of recruits, and the latest trailer for Starfleet Academy, revealed during the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con, promises a mix of mystery, high-stakes adventure, and emotional depth that feels right at home in the franchise’s legacy.
This second trailer gives fans a much deeper look at what’s to come, moving beyond the “college-bound” vibes of the first teaser released over the summer.
The series will follow the first group of cadets admitted to the legendary Academy, now housed aboard the U.S.S. Athena, in over a century, as the Federation continues rebuilding after the devastating events of “The Burn” from Star Trek: Discovery Season 3.
The footage shows a vibrant mix of classroom moments, training missions, and young adult drama, featuring both fresh faces and returning favorites from across the Star Trek timeline.
Robert Picardo reprises his Voyager role as the Emergency Medical Hologram, alongside Discovery stars Tig Notaro and Mary Wiseman, who return as Jett Reno and Sylvia Tilly.
At the center of the story is cadet Caleb Mir, played by Sandro Rosta, who seems destined for more than just academic success. The trailer reveals that Caleb’s past is deeply tied to Starfleet Academy’s new villain, Nus Braka, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, a half-Klingon, half-Tellarite hybrid with a dark history.
Braka once kidnapped Caleb’s mother, played by Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, She-Hulk), an event that shaped the young man’s life. Years later, Captain Nahla Ake, portrayed by Holly Hunter, finds Caleb and personally recruits him into the Academy.
Ake has her own complicated history with Braka, setting the stage for a tense reunion and an strong story arc that could become the series’ backbone.
The cast also includes Gina Yashere as Lura Thok, the half-Klingon, half-Jem’Hadar First Officer of the Athena and Cadet Master of the Academy. Other cadets include Karim Diané as Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon sciences prodigy; Kerrice Brooks as Sam, a Kasqian operations cadet; George Hawkins as Darem Reymi, a Khionian command-track cadet; Bella Shepard as Genesis Lythe, another command-track student; and Zoë Steiner as Tarima Sadal, daughter of the President of Betazed. Oded Fehr is also returning as Admiral Vance from Discovery in a guest role.
It was also revealed that Stephen Colbert will lend his voice to the Academy’s “Digital Dean of Students,” delivering daily in-universe announcements.
The 10-episode first season of Starfleet Academy premieres January 15 on Paramount+, launching with a two-episode debut.
