THE NORTHMAN Star Alexander Skarsgård Shares an Insane Scene That Left Him a Wreck
Director Robert Eggers’ Viking epic The Northman is one of my most anticipated films of the year. This movie looks freakin’ badass and in a recent interview with the film’s star Alexander Skarsgård, he recalls an insane scene that he shot that left him a wreck after he shot it.
In the film, Skarsgård plays a hulking Norse warrior named Amleth who is out for revenge for his murdered father. As you’ve seen in the trailer, he brutally kills a lot of people on his vengeful journey. This movie looks like a no-holds-barred revenge story that will be filled with bloody action.
In fact, there’s a scene where Skarsgård rips the throat out of someone in the heat of battle. When talking about this scene, the actor shared:
“It was the end of a very long, complex shot of the Viking berserkers raiding a Slav village. The choreography was so difficult, with all these elements, 50 people fighting simultaneously, the extras and the horses… making it look perfect was a real undertaking.
“That climax, where I rip a guy’s throat out and howl at the moon… it was primal. I just let it all out,” he laughs. “I was exhausted, and I think you see it in the shot. I was a wreck. Truly a wreck.”
Well, that just sounds like a great time! What a wild experience it must have been to shoot this movie! Skarsgård is joined in the film by Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk, Ralph Ineson, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe.
Focus Features will release The Northman in select US theaters on April 22nd, 2022.
