THE NORTHMAN Viking Epic Gets New Photos and There Will Be a "Naked Swordfight on a Volcano"
The Northman looks like it’s going to be an epic Viking movie. I love stories about Vikings and we really don’t see enough of those stories told on the big screen, so I’m pretty stoked about this film. I’m also excited about it because it comes from director Robert Eggers, the guy who previously brought us The Witch and The Lighthouse.
The Northman is set at the turn of the 10th century in Iceland, and the story explores how far a Viking prince will go get revenge for his murdered father. This is going to be a brutal, gritty, and violent movie and today we’ve got three new photos to share with you.
The first image features Alexander Skarsgård as the main character Amleth in full-on berserker mode, Ethan Hawke, who plays his ill-fated father, Aurvandill, and then there’s Willem Dafoe, who will be playing Heimir the fool. They all look freakin’ great in their roles!
When talking about taking on this film project, Eggers tells Total Film: "When I first thought, ‘I want to make a Viking movie,’ I knew three things. I knew it needs to take place mostly in Iceland, it needs to have a revenge story, and it needs to have a naked swordfight on a volcano…"
So, we have that to look forward to! I’m sure that scene is going to be visually insane!
The movie also stars Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk, and Ralph Ineson. Focus Features will release The Northman in select US theaters on April 22nd, 2022.
