THE ODYSSEY Photos Reveal New Looks at Lupita Nyong’o’s Clytemnestra, Zendaya’s Athena, and More

Fresh images from The Odyssey have arrived, giving fans a closer look at some of the film’s major female characters, including Lupita Nyong’o as Clytemnestra and Zendaya as Athena.

The upcoming epic from Christopher Nolan is shaping up to be one of the most visually massive movies of the year, especially with the filmmaker shooting the project on IMAX 70 mm film.

The newly released stills spotlight Clytemnestra, Penelope, Calypso, and Athena, with each character carrying a completely different vibe. The images dropped alongside recent Elle interviews with the actresses, where they discussed their roles in the mythological adventure.

Zendaya’s Athena appears dressed in simple white robes while seated aboard what looks like a ship. The goddess carries a cold, distant expression.

Nyong’o’s Clytemnestra looks equally intense. The Oscar-winning actress appears visibly shaken, as she stares at something off-screen. Her royal purple garments and ornate golden hair clip give the character a regal presence even in the middle of apparent chaos. Nyong’o is also pulling double duty in the film by playing Helen of Troy, though no image of that character has surfaced yet.

Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway’s Penelope is seen wearing a dark navy royal gown accented by a thick red waistband and gold mesh collar while gripping a golden bow. The image has a quiet tension to it, hinting at the strength and patience the Queen of Ithaca is known for in Greek mythology.

Then there’s Charlize Theron’s Calypso, who is shown embracing Matt Damon’s Odysseus. Dressed in soft beige robes, Calypso’s moment with Odysseus feels far warmer and more intimate than the other images released so far.

Nolan wrote and directed The Odyssey, with Emma Thomas producing alongside him through their Syncopy banner for Universal Pictures. The cast is packed with talent, including Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, and Mia Goth.

The movie also reunites Nolan with several longtime collaborators. Ludwig Göransson is composing the score after previously working with the director on Tenet and Oppenheimer. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and editor Jennifer Lame are also back for the massive action-adventure adaptation.

The Odyssey hits theaters on July 17.
