The OnePlus 7T Is Designed with Mobile Gaming in Mind Thanks to PUBG MOBILE
OnePlus and Player Unknown’s Battleground Mobile (PUBG Mobile) have partnered up to bring players the best experience for the game in the OnePlus 7T. This is a smartphone with some pretty great specifications that we’ll cover before I get to my thoughts on it.
The OnePlus 7T offers a 6.55” AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2400x1080 and a pixel density of 402 ppi. The screen also has a 90Hz refresh rate for smooth graphics. On the inside, consumers will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+, Adreno 640, 8 GB RAM, a 3,800 mAh battery, dual stereo speakers, and either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. The USB-C port can be used for Warp Charge 30T Fast Charging. Other features of the phone include in-display fingerprint reader and face unlock.
I think that covers most of the important specs and features, so now I’ll give you my thoughts on it. I do want to preface this review with the fact that I could not use the 7T as a phone in my experience. I moved my SIM card over from my old phone and everything worked, except I could not receive text messages. I spoke with OnePlus, and they said I had to try a different SIM card (I didn’t have one on hand) or talk to my carrier (Verizon in this case). Verizon was very helpful in working with me, but we couldn’t get it resolved and they said they would send me a new SIM card to try, but I have yet to receive it.
Despite my setbacks, I still walked around with the phone and used it for everything except calling and texting to see if I’d like to switch over from my Pixel 2. Let’s see how it stacks up.
There’s no arguing that the 7T is a powerful beast. It played several games on the highest settings with no problems whatsoever. In addition, the 7T has a gaming mode built in that will optimize the phone’s hardware to enhance your experience. This has been really nice for my mobile gaming needs. I installed PUBG Mobile and while it still looks like a mobile game, it looks like a really good-looking mobile game with the settings on high and the phone optimized with game mode. Just be careful with some higher settings in games as they can make the phone get pretty hot. I never found the phone too hot to handle though.
Another aspect of the phone that helps in gaming is that there are no bezels. There is a small notch at the top for the camera, but other than that, you have no big bezels. This gives you a lot of screen. Combine that with a very clear and bright screen, and your gaming is even better. There is a bit of a catch, though, as that means your hands will cover more of your phone just by holding it, but with some grip changes, you can really minimize it.
In addition, the built-in speakers are pretty clear. I’ve been impressed with the quality of speaker. The bass is lacking something, but I do not know of a mobile device that doesn’t have problems with the bass. Everything else is very clear though. When I played games, I could tell what was going on around me with the built-in speakers, and it helped me get a little more immersed.
OK, now, I’m going to talk about the camera. On paper, the 7T is the clear winner with a 48 MP versus the Pixel 2’s 12.2 MP. Plus, the 7T has three lenses for a variety of uses. Well, I took some pictures of my painted miniatures from the game Horrified and got these results with average lighting in the room. I will put the 7T photos on the left and Pixel 2 on the right. One nice feature of the 7T is that you can change the aspect ratio of the camera to 20:9, 4:3, or 1:1. The first picture will be the 20:9 on the 7T vs the Pixel 2 without flash, then with flash, then the 4:3 on the 7T vs the Pixel 2 without flash.
Finally, I want to talk about size. This is going to be 100% personal preference, but I do not like big phones. The Pixel 2 is the perfect size, in my opinion, I just wish it didn’t have the bezels. The 7T is tall and skinny. This is better than being tall and fat in my opinion, and at first, I was all about it. However, after a couple of days, it felt unbalanced in my hand because the extra weight at the top of the phone was unsupported and pulled the screen back.
Additional thoughts that I have include the fact that I don’t like fingerprint readers built into the screen. I have had a lot of problems using my fingerprint on the 7T but have had almost no problems with the Pixel 2’s reader on the back. Also, Face unlock is very fascinating. It works really well, most of the time. There have been a few times where it didn’t work and there are times where I want to just look at my lock screen, but it unlocks because it sees my face. In addition, I don’t like having the camera bulge out of the center of the back of the phone. I prefer it in the corner. Once again, personal preference.
The OnePlus 7T is a powerhouse that works well for gaming on the go. The large screen is also great, and the camera is fantastic. If you’re in the market for a new phone and like mobile gaming and unlocked phones, the 7T is a solid choice. If you like it, you can purchase it starting today for $599.
