THE OUTER WORLDS is the Best RPG I've Played in a Long Time
Obsidian Entertainment was kind enough to send me a copy of The Outer Worlds on PC and it has been a blast to play. I’ve logged in several hours already and I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of the game. So, shall I just start gushing now?
First thing I noticed about the game is that it is graphically very beautiful. The people, the scenery, the animals, everything just looks pretty and I’m running it on low settings (I think it may be time to consider upgrading my computer). I can only imagine how incredible this game must look on a stronger machine.
Second, the characters are so much fun in this game. The voice actors did an amazing job of bringing their characters to life and I found myself attached to them even though I really didn’t want to like some of them. In addition to the voice actors, the writers did a good job of writing the characters as well. I’ll admit that I didn’t like Parvati very much at first, but after completing one little part of her character quest I fell in love with the way she was written and performed. Another great character is ADA, the ships AI. She is hilarious!
Third, this game plays like a blend of some of my favorite RPGs to create a cohesive and easy to learn experience. It felt familiar, yet new and polished with how it dealt with your character. The leveling system was very easy to learn, and I never felt like I could make a bad decision while choosing what stats to improve. Plus, there are parts that you can completely redo later on if you feel you really need to make a change.
Finally, the story. I don’t feel like I’m very far in the story, but it is immersive and intriguing. In true RPG fashion, there are multiple endings as well with plenty of side adventures for you to get caught up in. You get to make a lot of choices in the game and these can have some cool effects on the story and your character. For instance, early on you can try to bring some deserters back to a city, but they don’t want to as long as their idiot leader is in charge. What do you do? Do you lie to some of the deserters to get them to go back? Do you murder the idiot leader or convince him to step down? I love games like this. Also, when you use skills in conversations, you get experience points.
The Outer Worlds is a fantastic game for anyone. If I had to say anything negative, it would be that I wish there was a mode for playing in 3rd person perspective. Other than that though, I’ve been absolutely in love with the game.
