THE PRINCESS BRIDE Musical Is in Early Stages for Disney Theatrical to Head to Broadway
Apparently people who have rank in the world of making musicals have been talking about making The Princess Bride into a Broadway musical for years now. Things had been at a bit of a standstill for quite some time until just recently, when a new creative team was hired to pull this thing together.
Composer and lyricist David Yazbek, who is responsible for the music and lyrics for the Broadway musicals The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Band’s Visit, Tootsie, and others, has jumped on board, as well as book writers Bob Martin (The Prom, The Drowsy Chaperone) and Rick Elice (The Cher Show, Jersey Boys).
The musical will be based on the 1973 novel by William Goldman and the beloved 1987 film adaptation which starred Cary Elwes as Westley, Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, Fred Savage, Peter Falk, and many others.
This becoming a musical adaptation on Broadway just seems like a no-brainer. They already have a huge, dedicated built-in fan base that would show up in droves to see it. I know I’d love to. My husband and I watched The Princess Bride on DVD on our first date, 19 years after it came out just because we both loved it so much, then we recently showed it to our three kids, who are all planning on being characters from the movie next Halloween. It’s obviously a timeless movie, and I think it would make a wonderful Broadway show.
We will let you know as more details become available. Are you a fan of The Princess Bride? Do you think it makes for good musical material?
