The Rationality of Your Irrational Fears

ScienceVideos by Mily Dunbar

Yesterday we talked about our realistic fears, and today it’s time to talk about our irrational fears. Specifically, how our irrational fears might actually be kind of rational. Sort of. In an episode called "Why I'm Scared of Spiders," It’s Okay To Be Smart host Joe Hanson looks at his own arachnophobia and the scientific reasons behind it. It’s interesting to note that arachnophobia may be heritable, because GeekTyrant editors Free Reyes, Eli Reyes, and their brother are all terrified of spiders. One time we saw a spider crawl out of some cardboard, and they all freaked the hell out while I disposed of the poor thing. Anyway, watch the video so you that next time you’re afraid of something dumb, you can explain to your friends that science says it’s totally reasonable.
