THE REN & STIMPY SHOW Is Getting a Reboot From Comedy Central

It looks like Ren and Stimpy are going to make a big comeback with a reboot of The Ren & Stimpy Show. The project is being produced for Comedy Central, and it’s said to be a “reimagining.” The series joins the recently announced Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge, which is also coming to Comedy Central. I guess the network is looking to tap into nostalgia for the ‘90s.

The series was created by John Kricfalusi, and it followed the adventures of “Ren, an emotionally unstable Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured yet dimwitted cat.” It originally aired for five seasons on Nickelodeon, and ended there in December 1995. The following year, the series had a run on MTV. There’s actually a documentary coming out titled Happy Happy Joy Joy that dives into the crazy behind-the-scenes story of this series and its creator.

Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for ViacomCBS Entertainment and Youth Group said in a statement:

“I want to thank our partners at Nick Animation as we re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team.”

Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment and Youth Group added:

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio. Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

While I’d like to be excited about this, I seriously doubt that this reboot will be as insane or and crazy as the original one was. The fact that the original show even exists because of its level of insanity is amazing to me! I can’t believe that show was made for kids back in the day! But, I loved it! A lot of kids did! I just think that whatever they do with this remake is going to be tame compared to what we got before. I hope I’m wrong, though!

What do you think about Ren & Stimpy getting a series reboot? How do you think it will turn out?
