THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 Featurette Teases Gandalf and the Dark Wizard’s Mysterious Past and a Major Tolkien Mystery
Gandalf may have finally gotten his name in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but his story is about to get a lot more interesting. A new Season 3 featurette hints at a mysterious connection between Gandalf and the Dark Wizard, and it could lead to an answer to one of J.R.R. Tolkien's biggest unanswered questions about Middle-earth.
Season 2 confirmed that the Stranger, played by Daniel Weyman, was Gandalf all along. However, the identity of the sinister Dark Wizard, played by Ciarán Hinds, remains a mystery. What makes things even more interesting is that these two apparently knew each other long before their encounter in Middle-earth.
In the new featurette, Hinds offers a little insight into their shared past, saying, "They have a history, and it's got lost in the mists of time about who they are and what their mission is."
Weyman also discusses Gandalf's connection to something called the "Dreamscape," a mysterious force that appears to unlock memories of the two wizards standing together on a mountain. What's especially interesting is that both characters appear to be wearing cloaks with a bluish tint.
For Tolkien fans, that detail might sound familiar because it raises the possibility that the show is exploring the mythology of the Blue Wizards.
In Tolkien's writings, the Blue Wizards, known as Morinehtar and Romestamo, were sent into the eastern and southern regions of Middle-earth during the Second Age to oppose Sauron's growing influence. They're among the most mysterious figures in Tolkien's mythology, with very little known about their adventures or ultimate fates.
Could The Rings of Power be connecting Gandalf and the Dark Wizard to these legendary figures? It's an intriguing possibility, especially considering that the series has already taken some creative liberties with Tolkien's established timeline.
The featurette also suggests that Gandalf isn't necessarily looking to destroy his former companion. He may actually be trying to save him. Weyman reveals Gandalf's initial mission in Season 3, saying, "It's going to start with, 'Win your old friend back.'"
That's an interesting direction for the story because it suggests the Dark Wizard wasn't always the threatening figure we've come to know. Whatever happened between these two, Gandalf clearly believes there's still something worth saving in his old friend.
Of course, none of this confirms that the Dark Wizard is one of Tolkien's Blue Wizards, or that the series intends to reinterpret their identities. The blue cloaks, forgotten memories, and mysterious shared mission give fans something to speculate about, though.
It'll be interesting to see how far the series takes this storyline, especially since Tolkien left so much of the Blue Wizards' history unexplored. There's plenty of room for the writers to play with these characters, and the idea of Gandalf trying to bring an old friend back from darkness could make for a compelling story.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns to Prime Video on November 11.
