THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 Is Being Called "Epic in Every Sense of the Word" in First Reactions

The first reactions to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 have arrived, and it sounds like Prime Video's fantasy series is heading into its biggest season yet! Critics have gotten an early look at the first two episodes, and they're praising the massive scale, the storytelling, and Charlie Vickers' sinister performance as Sauron.

I've been a fan of this series since it started, and I've really enjoyed the first two seasons. So, it's great to see Season 3 getting such strong positive reactions. I've been looking forward to seeing how this next chapter plays out, especially with Sauron moving closer to forging the One Ring.

Rotem Rusak of Nerdist had high praise for the new season, saying: "I have been a huge fan of The Rings of Power throughout, but the start of this season is not only some of the series' best work but TV's best."

That's some serious praise, especially considering how much great television we've gotten in recent years.

Chris Killian of ComicBook was also impressed with the opening episodes, writing: "I’ve seen the first couple episodes of #TheRingsOfPowerS3 and no spoilers, but the first 2 episodes are bangers and this series is getting better and better as it goes on."

Killian also singled out Vickers' performance, adding: "Charlie Vickers as Sauron is a highlight, he just oozes evil."

GamesRadar+'s Fay Watson was equally enthusiastic about the premiere, writing: "The first episode of #TheRingsofPower season 3 is epic in every sense of the word. Charlie Vickers steals the show as Sauron, almost at the height of his powers, relishing in every villainous smirk. The scale and stakes already have me thinking this could be the best season yet."

Meanwhile, critic Rachel Leishman, who watched the first two episodes, shared: "I have seen the first two episodes of #RingsOfPower season 3 and it is better than ever! Just as breathtaking and captivating as its previous seasons."

These are encouraging reactions for fans who have enjoyed Prime Video's take on Middle-earth, and it sounds like the series is continuing to build on what came before.

Season 3 picks up five years after the events of Season 2, with Middle-earth caught in a massive war between Sauron and the Elves. The Dark Lord is extending his reach from Barad-dûr while searching for the knowledge needed to create the One Ring.

His ultimate goal is to forge a weapon capable of controlling the other Rings of Power and bending their wearers to his will. Meanwhile, the Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Wizards are fighting to keep Middle-earth from falling under his control.

This is a major chapter in Tolkien's mythology, as the creation of the One Ring will eventually lead to the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Prime Video's official synopsis offers more details about what's coming: “Season 3 finds Sauron transformed into his legendary armored form as he enslaves his ring-servants, the Nazgnagôl, and sows destruction across Middle-earth through deception and might.

“Meanwhile, Gandalf emerges as the iconic wizard of lore, and Galadriel continues her evolution into the wise and powerful elven Lady of Lothlórien. And, for the first time on screen, audiences will witness the foundational moment that shaped Middle-earth and became a cornerstone of popular culture: the forging of the One Ring – capping Sauron’s quest for ultimate power as he battles the resistance of Elves, Dwarves, and Men.”

Seeing Sauron in his iconic armor and watching the One Ring finally come into existence are two things I've been eager to see since the series began. With the war escalating and the characters moving closer to their familiar destinies, there's a lot to look forward to.

Of course, these reactions are based on just the opening episodes, so we'll have to see how the rest of the season holds up. But I love hearing that the series is getting better as it goes along, and these early reviews have definitely raised my excitement.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on November 11.
