The ROBOCOP Documentary Series ROBODOC: THE CREATION OF ROBOCOP Lands Streaming Deal
There’s a new four-part RoboCop documentary series coming titled RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop and Cinedigm has landed the North American rights. The series will launch on Cinedigm’s horror streaming service Screambox and then on digital platforms early next year.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop has been in development for over six years and it will feature interviews with members of the cast and crew, which includes Peter Weller, Diane Robin, Ronny Cox, Nancy Allen, Ray Wise, and director Paul Verhoeven.
The series will take a super deep dive into the story behind the creation of the franchise, which is sure to be fascinating. The doc is a fan-funded project produced by Gary Smart and directed by Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen who previously worked on Pennywise: The Story of IT.
Brad Miska, Managing Director of Bloody Disgusting, which powers Screambox, said in a statement: “RoboCop is not only a technological icon but a film that pushed boundaries with its practical effects and excessively violent gore. Much of what we see on screen today can be credited to the innovative minds of the 70’s and 80’s. We’re thrilled fans will finally be able to see the story on Screambox next year.”
RoboCop was said to be partly inspired by writer Edward Neumeier’s work in the art department on Blade Runner. The awesome RoboCop design was created by makeup effects artist Rob Bottin (The Thing, Total Recall).
Co-director Eastwood Allen stated: “We’ve crafted something together to incorporate visuals and sound in an effort to immerse viewers into the world of 80s filmmaking and offer something completely unique to the ‘making of’ format.”
Co-director Chris Griffiths added: “As a fan of RoboCop for the past 30 years, this project has been a labor of love for me and I can’t wait to share this unique project with the fans, especially those who have stood by us all these years.”
In the original film “a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy (Weller) into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.”
I love behind-the-scenes stories of how movies were made, so this is something that I’m excited about watching!
