The Rock Will Play a Disabled War Veteran in His New Action Movie SKYSCRAPER, Which Now Has a Release Date
One of the million projects that's currently on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's development slate is a Towering Inferno-style disaster movie called Skyscraper, and Johnson recently took to Instagram to announce a few details about it:
There are a couple of notable items in there. One of them is that the film is shooting — where else? — in China, marking yet another film to attempt to appeal to the ever-growing (and always lucrative) Chinese market by filming there.
But more importantly than that, Johnson says he'll be playing a disabled war veteran in this movie. That's the kind of character that isn't usually front and center in a mega-budget action blockbuster, and though we aren't sure the extent of the disability, it will presumably take him down a peg from his usual brash, confident on-screen persona. (To be clear, I'm not suggesting that disabled veterans can't be brash and confident, just guessing this kind of role might allow Johnson to stretch his range a bit more than what he's used to.) Johnson has a long history of working with veterans, going as far as to put on a whole show about it on Spike recently called Rock the Troops. Should be interesting to see what he does with this kind of role and the extent of his character's disability.
Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball, We're The Millers, Central Intelligence) wrote the script and will direct, and Skyscraper will arrive in theaters on July 13, 2018.
