The Russo Bros. Confirm Next AVENGERS Films Will Draw Inspiration From Both SECRET WARS Marvel Comics Runs
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has used the characters we know and love from the comics which introduced them, and while some stories and plotlines have been familiar, the movies and shows have also been written in a way that keeps fans guessing.
The MCU has been allowed to create new worlds based on the ones in the pages, and while many comic storyline names have been lent to the films, we rarely see a true to comic adaptation.
While that will remain mostly true, directors Joe & Anthony Russo aka The Russo Brothers, are looking to get ideas from both the comic book runs of Secret Wars, which will be the second film in their upcoming two-part Avengers epic.
During an interview with Tech Radar (via CBM), the Russos revealed that they will "draw inspiration" from both the first Jim Shooter-written Secret Wars that was published in 1984, and the Jonathan Hickman-penned version that was released in 2015.
When asked if they'd be looking to one comic run over the other, Joe said, "Well, we always create our own version of the story. So, we use the comics as loose inspiration.
But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That's something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they're] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we'll draw inspiration from both of them."
Avengers: Doomsday set for release on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars is arriving on May 7, 2027.
