The Russo Bros. Confirm That Iron Man's Death Will Connect to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom In AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

The Russo Bros. are in the process of developing Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars for Marvel Studios, and they’re pulling off one of the boldest moves in the MCU yet by bringing back Robert Downey Jr., not as Iron Man, but as the villainous Doctor Doom.

It’s pretty wild that Downey Jr. s about to play one of Marvel’s greatest villains after playing its greatest hero. Naturally, this has raised the big question: how does this work? Is this going to be a completely different character or Is this a Tony Stark Variant?

When asked how they plan to introduce Downey Jr. as Doom in Avengers: Endgame, Anthony Russo confirmed that Iron Man’s death will be connected to Doom.

“We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story. But there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to.”

I guess if anyone can reinvent themselves within the MCU, it’s Robert Downey Jr. His performance as Tony Stark was awesome, and it’s going to be interesting to see what the Russo’s have planned for this character.

Whether this means some kind of multiversal twist or something else, something crazier, I’m sure fans will be eagerly waiting to see how this is all going to play out.

Joe Russo recently talked about Downey’s commitment to crafting this new take on Doom, saying: "It’s a very intense process developing the character. [Downey] is so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is.

"He’s writing backstory [and sharing] costume ideas. He’s really — we were just on the phone this morning, before we got here, talking about it. … He just loves really rich, three-dimensional characters, and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character."

The Russos aren’t revealing any more details just yet, but their confidence in Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom speaks volumes.
