The Russo Bros. Discuss Hulk and Black Widow's Relationship Saying it Was Joss Whedon's Decision
When we see Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) see each other for the first time in two years in Avengers: Infinity War, they awkwardly acknowledge each other, but aside from that, their relationship is not addressed at all.
During a recent Q&A, director Joe and Anthony Russo address the relationship between the characters and it's doesn't seem like something they are interested in exploring it any future. In fact, they just say that was a whole thing that Joss Whedon came up with for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joe says:
"That was a Joss Whedon decision so it's not something I can speak to. We don't directly translate the comics to the films -- why go see the films when you know how it's going to end? And it isn't a translation. It's our interpretation for the MCU. I think Joss was trying to find interesting ways of pairing up the characters and create dynamics between them. I know it seems a generally unpopular choice. You know, you can't win them all."
I didn't realize that the Banner and Natasha Romanoff relationship was an unpopular decision. I actually really liked what Whedon was trying to do with the characters. I liked how their relationship was coming together and the dynamic that it added to the story. I was actually a little bummed out that the relationship wasn't explored a little in Infinity War, but I understand why they decided not to. Joe went on to explain:
"Look, he disappeared for two years. She's pretty self-sufficient, she didn't wait around for him. There's sort of unspoken truth that there's need to be a spoken resolution."
Bruce didn't even say anything about her new hairstyle! Come on Bruce! Ya gotta notice those things!
What do you think about this? Would you have liked to see a little more interaction between these two characters in the Infinity War? Do you think the relationship should have been shut down?
